Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen insists the entire squad is desperate for Arsene Wenger to commit his future to the club.
The 64-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season and negotiations have been ongoing all season. The Frenchman recently celebrated 1,000 games in charge of the Gunners - although there wasn't much to celebrate following Arsenal's 6-0 demise at the hands of Chelsea - but the Belgian claimed Wenger was the right man to take the club forward.
“Everybody wants him to stay as long as he can. He’s been incredible, what he’s done for this club and for the players as well. We would be really happy for him signing on for a few more years. "
Vermaelen also hailed the spirit and work ethic of the team.The 28-year-old says the moral in the dressing room is high and the players are all "working for each other".
“The spirit is unbelievable in the team. We’ve worked a lot on our team shape and everybody knows their role in the team, everybody’s working for each other and that’s because there is a great team spirit. That’s the great improvement for us this season."
The Premier League's longest serving manager recently challenged Vermaelen to prove himself following injury to Laurent Koscielny who is expected to be out for a few weeks.
"We know Thomas has paid a heavy price for having Laurent and Per who worked well together," Wenger Said.
"But he has an opportunity to show how good he is and I'm sure he will take it."
