On and off the court very few tennis stars attract as much attention as Maria Sharapova. The Russian bombshell is a rare example of a player armed with killer looks as well as terrific sporting skills. Unlike so many female players who remain in our memories more as models than athletes, Sharapova has not let her modelling career compromise her tennis.
The former World no. 1 has won four grand slams. She completed a career slam when she lifted the 2012 French Open trophy. Along with her grand slam victories, she has 28 WTA titles to her credit and an overall winning percentage of 80% at Grand Slam events.
Sharapova is also the highest paid female athlete in the sports world. Her fierce skills on the tennis court are matched by her graceful appearances at fashion shows, glittering product launches and glossy cover pages.
The dazzling damsel, who was once engaged to basketball player Sasha Vujacic, is currently dating fellow tennis player Grigor Dimitrov and the two are rumoured to be planning to tie the knot very soon.
In 2007, Sharapova was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). She has made several donations towards various UN projects and other social causes.
