There was trouble in Paris last night prior to the Champions League match between Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain as Chelsea hooligans took most of the blame for it.
Henry Samuel and Peter Allen of the Telegraph reported on the violence that took place in the Rue St Denis area of the city.
Apparently, there were more than 100 people involved in the destruction. The Telegraph said Chelsea fans were drinking at the Frog and Rosbif pub and then crossed the road to the Thistle bar. They then started yelling racist chants and making obscene gestures before attacking PSG supporters.
One police officer said at the scene, “We’re trying to contain the violence but it’s spreading.”
A 16-year-old French student named Sarah Avel said, “It’s terrifying. I just want to get out of here. We could hear the chanting all afternoon but we didn’t expect fighting.”
Reporters took photos of the incident and also took to their Twitter accounts during the incident. However, there were conflicting reports on who started the trouble as a Paris policeman was quoted as saying, “Around 100 'ultra' PSG hooligans have been targeting Chelsea fans all day, trying to provoke them into fights.”
Peter Allen tweeted, “Serious fighting in rue St Denis, Paris, involving Chelsea & PSG fans in progress. Shops & cafés attacked.
He followed it up by writing, “EDL chants & Sieg Heil salutes fm alleged Chelsea fans currently smashing up shops & cafés in central Paris.”
